Anthony Goncalves - Kanopi
WHO: Chef Anthony Gonçalves is the chef-owner of Kanopi, an intimate Portuguese tasting menu concept in White Plains, New York.
ABOUT: Born in Yonkers and raised in a Portuguese-American household, Chef Gonçalves was surrounded from a young age by the flavors and rhythms of his heritage, where cooking was a daily act of connection and culture. After studying communications and marketing at Long Island University, Chef Gonçalves moved to Manhattan, where he spent a decade working in the music and nightlife business.
In his late 20s, he began cooking professionally at Il Mulino in Soho, where he fell in love with the art of hospitality and the power of a tailored dining experience. A self-taught chef, Chef Gonçalves opened his first restaurant, Trotters, in White Plains in 1991 in partnership with his mother. He followed it up with 42 The Restaurant in 2006, an upscale Portuguese concept located on the 42nd floor of the former Ritz-Carlton in White Plains. Kanopi, opened in 2020, is the most refined expression of his culinary journey — a love letter to Portuguese cuisine and hospitality, guided by Japanese technique and an ethos of respect. His menus reflect a deep commitment to seasonality and quality, sourcing the best ingredients from local Westchester farms as well as specialty European purveyors. A true family-run restaurant, Kanopi is a collaborative effort with Chef Gonçalves’ wife, sons, father, and a tight-knit team working alongside him every day.
